
The Mathews County Sheriff’s Office has announced two arrests in connection with a residential burglary in which jewelry and firearms were stolen.
On April 15, deputies responded to the 100 block of Morris Flippin Road for a reported break‑in. According to the sheriff’s office, more than $1,000 worth of jewelry and guns were taken while the homeowners were away.
Deputies canvassed the neighborhood and, with help from residents, video surveillance, and Flock camera technology, identified suspects from Gloucester and Newport News.

On Saturday evening, April 18, 2026, with assistance from the Newport News Police Department, Michael Paul West, 47, of Hayes, Virginia, was arrested and charged with:
- Breaking and Entering with Intent to Commit Grand Larceny
- Grand Larceny: Jewelry
- Grand Larceny of Firearms (2 counts)
- Violent Felon in Possession of a Firearm
West is being held without bond at the Middle Peninsula Regional Security Center in Saluda.

On Tuesday, April 21, 2026, also with assistance from Newport News Police, Shanon Marie Smith, 31, of Newport News, was arrested and charged with:
- Breaking and Entering with Intent to Commit Grand Larceny
- Grand Larceny: Jewelry
- Grand Larceny of Firearms (2 counts)
Smith was brought before a Newport News magistrate late Tuesday and is being held on a $6,000 secured bond.
The sheriff’s office reported that the stolen jewelry has been recovered.
