Fredericksburg Police have boosted their presence at parks and trails across the city amid an ongoing investigation into a string of sexual assault incidents along the Canal Path and Heritage Trail.
According to the Fredericksburg Police Department, the first incident occurred March 19 along the Canal Path, where a suspect approached a woman, grabbed her buttocks, and fled on foot.
He is described as a male, approximately 5’10”, between 25 and 35 years old, with a medium build.

A second incident was reported March 23 along the Heritage Trail. A similarly described suspect—male, approximately 5’11” to 6’01” with a medium build—approached a woman, grabbed her buttocks, and fled.
Then, on March 25 at approximately 12:40 p.m., also along the Heritage Trail. Police say a suspect approached a woman, grabbed her buttocks, and fled on foot.
He is described as a male, possibly Hispanic, approximately 5’07”, with short black hair. The investigation into whether the incidents are connected remains ongoing.
FPD said they are still investigating an unsolved sexual assault from last year.
That incident occurred October 19, 2025, around 9 p.m. on the Canal Path between Washington Avenue and Emancipation Highway near Cossey Pond. The suspect in that case was described as a male, approximately 5’04” to 5’05”, medium build, possibly Middle Eastern, Hispanic, or Indian.
Addressing Flow of Info
In response to community concerns about how quickly information was released, the police department said the timeline reflects the need to confirm details before going public.
Officials said the first of the recent reports came in March 19, followed by additional incidents on March 23 and March 25. During those early stages, investigators worked with victims to gather and verify information and to determine whether a pattern existed.
“Releasing unconfirmed details can risk compromising the investigation,” the department said, adding that once a potential pattern was identified and reliable information was available, the public was notified on March 25.
Police said a mobile surveillance platform was deployed in the area on March 23, and there is a noticeable increase in police presence along city trails and paths.
