
A day after a 47‑year‑old man was found shot inside his Portsmouth home, police announced an arrest and multiple charges.
On Saturday, April 18, Portsmouth police responded to a report of a shooting in the 200 block of Mayflower Road. Officers found Christopher Blair suffering from gunshot wounds. He was taken to a hospital, where he later died.
According to the preliminary investigation, 44‑year‑old Bentley Tramaine Cherry went to Blair’s home, where the two men got into an argument. Police say Cherry then shot Blair.

By Sunday, police reported that Cherry, listed as a Suffolk resident was in custody. He is charged with first‑degree murder, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, and shooting in the commission of a felony.
Court records show Cherry was charged with malicious wounding in 2009. The charge was amended to unlawful wounding, and he was convicted and sentenced to 5 years with 4 years suspended.
