
On Oct. 7, there was another major step toward creating a regional trail connecting Ashland to Petersburg. Community advocates, project staff, and government leaders gathered for the groundbreaking of the southern section of the Fall Line Trail.
This upcoming 10-mile section will connect Petersburg, Colonial Heights and Chesterfield, with completion expected in winter 2028.

The ultimate vision is a 43-mile paved, multi-use trailĀ running from Ashland through the Richmond region to Petersburg, connecting seven localities and providing a continuous corridor for walking, bicycling and recreation.

Trail status by locality
- Ashland: 0.6 miles complete.
- Hanover: 4 miles complete.
- Henrico: 7 miles total; Woodman Road and Park Street sections are complete.
- Richmond: 12.5 miles planned; construction begins on the Bryan Park section in 2026.
- Chesterfield: 17.5 miles planned; construction begins in 2026.
- Colonial Heights: 1.5 miles planned; included in the southern section project.
- Petersburg: 0.1 mile planned; included in the southern section project.
As of March, about 5 miles of trail were open for use.
