A 72‑year‑old man allegedly shot into two homes in the middle of the night, then engaged in an hour‑long standoff in his own residence, Patrick County Sheriff Dan Smith reported.
At about 3:30 a.m. on June 9, the Patrick County Sheriff’s Office received a shots‑fired call in the area of Mountain View Loop.
Responding deputies found that shots had been fired into two occupied homes. In one residence, a bullet struck close to where a 3‑year‑old was sleeping, Smith stated.
Both houses are located across the road from Curtis Harold McBride’s home, and the investigation provided probable cause to obtain a search warrant for his residence.

According to Smith, despite multiple attempts, McBride refused to come to the door, prompting the tactical team and the Bearcat armored vehicle from the Henry County Sheriff’s Office to respond.
After additional unsuccessful attempts to get McBride to exit, the armored vehicle breached the front door at 11 a.m. Smith said McBride eventually came to the doorway but still would not comply with commands to come out.
Deputies closed the distance, and about 15 minutes later were able to remove him in a manner that resulted in only minor injuries. He was treated before being taken to jail.
Smith reported that two rifles were recovered from McBride’s home.
McBride is charged with two counts of shooting into an occupied dwelling and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. More charges are expected, Smith stated on Tuesday.
