The 55-year-old suspect accused of shooting two Carroll County, Virginia, deputies has been captured.
According to Carroll County Sheriff Kevin Kemp, on May 29, his office received a request from a family member to conduct a welfare check on Fancy Gap Highway in Cana. Two deputies were dispatched, and upon arrival, they made contact with Michael Puckett.
During the encounter, Puckett opened fire on the officers, Kemp said, and the deputies returned fire. Both deputies were struck. Deputy Logan Utt was pronounced dead. The second, unnamed deputy was struck in a ballistic vest, received medical evaluation, and is reported to be in stable condition.

Puckett fled the scene and remained on the run for several days. During that time, he was charged with aggravated murder of a law enforcement officer.
Multiple law enforcement agencies, including the Virginia State Police, U.S. Marshals Service, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, FBI, and the Surry County Sheriff’s Office, coordinated a manhunt. Puckett was captured in Surry, NC on June 1, the same day as Utt’s ceremonial procession.
Utt, a military veteran, joined the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office in 2023.

Following the incident, Sheriff Kemp publicly thanked partner agencies for providing personnel and support, noting that their assistance allowed the department to continue serving the community while the CCSO mourns the loss of Deputy Utt.
