I-95 Shutdown in Caroline Caused y Fatal Tractor-Trailer Crash

A fatal crash involving two tractor‑trailers triggered the hours‑long shutdown of I‑95 South at mile marker 113 in Caroline County on Wednesday, May 20.

Virginia State Police say 25‑year‑old Xavion Jamal Holmes Mahoney, of Charlotte, NC, was killed after his 2018 Freightliner Cascadia slammed into the back of a 2007 Freightliner.

The impact brought every southbound lane to a standstill as VSP’s Motor Carrier Safety Team and Crash Reconstruction Team worked the scene and crews cleared the wreckage.

Mahoney was taken to Mary Washington Hospital, where he later died from his injuries.

The second driver has not yet been identified. State Police say the investigation is still ongoing.
