Two people are dead, including a man fatally shot by police, after an officer‑involved shooting early Monday at an apartment complex on Canterbury Square in Alexandria.
Officers were dispatched around 4 a.m. to 27 Canterbury Square after a 911 caller reported that a female had been shot inside the apartment. When officers arrived, a family member was standing near the doorway and was immediately removed from the scene for safety.
Inside the unit, officers encountered a barricaded suspect in a bedroom where they believed the wounded female was located. McGuire said the man refused repeated verbal commands to come out.

According to McGuire, the situation escalated when the suspect suddenly “running full speed” down the hall at the officers, “charging at them.”
Two officers opened fire and the suspect was hit. Officers immediately began life‑saving measures, the chief reported.
Once officers moved into the bedroom, they found a female who had been shot multiple times. The victim and the suspect were pronounced dead at the scene.
At yesterday’s press briefing, McGuire said investigators had not yet determined whether the suspect was armed when he charged at officers, adding that body cam footage will be reviewed to help determine that.
McGuire also said he did not yet know whether the suspect fired any shots after police arrived.
“We do believe that it involves family members,” McGuire said of the incident.

The CERT team is leading the criminal investigation into the shooting. The department’s Office of Professional Responsibility will conduct an administrative review to determine whether the officers followed policy, and the Office of the Independent Monitor will also conduct and investigation.
The two officers who fired their weapons—each with 7.5 to 8 years of experience—have been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigations.
McGuire emphasized that the case remains active and evolving. So, facts could change as new details emerge. However, he committed to releasing body‑camera footage “within a reasonable time period.”
