Man appears to have mental issues, dies in Greensville police chase

A 48-year-old “who was appearing to be suffering from mental issues,” was killed in a crash in Southampton County, Virginia State Police announced.

On Friday, Nov. 10, VSP was called out at about 7:21 a.m. to assist the Greensville Sheriff’s Department with a disturbance at the Simmon’s Travel Center in Emporia.

At the scene, VSP reported finding Lashone Antonio Butler doing things, including urinating in the roadway and climbing on vehicles. After he was identified, police say, he ran away from Simmon’s Travel Center, got into a Kia Optima, and drove off.

Greensville Sheriff’s Office pursued Butler, VSP stated, and the chase went through the City of Emporia, onto Rt. 58 and then Rt. 35. The pursuit ended on Ivor Rd in the Town of Ivor when Butler crashed.
