2 Young Adults Killed in 2 Rockingham County Vehicle Crashes

Two young adults lost their lives in fatal crashes in Rockingham County this week.

Christmas Day crash

Virginia State Police announced it has launched an investigation into a fatal two-vehicle crash in on Christmas day that occurred on N Valley Pike.

The incident occurred shortly after noon. A 2015 Subaru Legacy driven by 22-year-old Garcia F. Hernandez was headed north on N. Valley Pike near Smithland Rd. According to VSP, the vehicle crossed the centerline and collided head-on with a GMC Envoy that was headed south. The impact of that collision caused both vehicles to run off the road, police say.

Hernandez, a Rockingham resident, was not wearing a seatbelt and was thrown from the Legacy during the crash. Despite the injuries, he made it to Sentara RMH Medical Center, but he later died at the hospital.

The GMC was driven by Jorge A. Castaneda-Rosales, age 24, of Timberville. He was also carrying an adult female passenger. Both were also transported to Sentara RMH Medical Center with injuries VSP described as “minor.”

Post-Christmas crash

At 10:51 a.m., there was a crash on Daphna Rd. just north or Zion Church Rd.

Virginia State Police said they are also investigating that incident, which led to the death of 24-year-old Mckayla B. Miller.

Miller was in 2007 Honda Civic headed south on Daphna, and according to VSP, she ran off the right side of the road and overcorrected. She then crossed the centerline and ran off the left side of the road. Police say the Civic crashed into an embankment and then overturned.

Miller, a Rockingham resident, also died at Sentara RMH Medical Center. VSP said she was not wearing a seatbelt.
