All four juveniles rescued from a burning car amid a police chase have been hospitalized, Virginia State Police announced.
The chase was initiated Monday night on Van Dorn St. by Alexandria Police after an officer reportedly attempted to stop a Hyundai Elantra suspected to be stolen out of Prince George’s County, Maryland.
According to VSP, the car refused to stop and state police joined the pursuit at Van Dorn and Vine streets at approximately 11:19 p.m.
VSP said the pursuit went along Van Dorn Street, Telegraph Road, Route 236, and Route 1.
While on Rt. 1, the Elantra driver allegedly rammed a trooper who crashed into a power pole and brought down the wires onto the roadway.
The Elantra kept going, VSP said. And the driver allegedly ran a red light at the intersection of Rt. 1 and Fort Hunt Rd. then hit a Chevy Silverado and a Toyota Corolla. According to VSP, the Elantra came to a stop and burst into flames.
Troopers and two Fairfax police officers pulled the four youth from the car. One of the juveniles was flown to Inova Fairfax Hospital. The other three were transported via ambulance.
As of last night, VSP said the driver and two of the occupants are in critical condition and the third passenger is in stable condition.
The driver of the Silverado was taken to the hospital with minor injuries. The trooper who crashed into the pole went to the hospital to be checked out for minor injuries and has since been released, said VS.
A stolen firearm was recovered from the driver of the Elantra, VSP reported, adding charges are pending.
