A 5-year-old child has died following a devastating head-on collision that was part of a multi-vehicle crash on Interstate 64 in Newport News. Virginia State Police said charges are pending.
The incident unfolded on June 20, 2025, when Virginia State Police were called to a crash on I-64 eastbound between mile markers 249 and 250, near Fort Eustis Boulevard.

The crash involved four vehicles and resulted in serious injuries, prompting the shutdown of both eastbound and westbound lanes.
According to preliminary investigations, Willie I. Greene, 45, of Boston, was driving a Dodge Durango eastbound at a high rate of speed. Greene rear-ended a 2022 Hyundai Sonata, causing the Sonata to lose control and run off the road. The car hit a guardrail and came to rest on the shoulder and was in the westbound lanes.
Meanwhile, Greene reportedly “crossed the median at a high rate of speed, entering the westbound lanes traveling in the opposite direction.” He sideswiped a 2012 Toyota Tacoma and continued until colliding head-on with a Nissan Altima.
The Nissan was driven by Tonya Colis, 39, of Yorktown, who was carrying her 5-year-old child. Police reported that the child was not properly restrained and was ejected from the car seat upon impact.

All parties except the driver of the Toyota Tacoma, David L. Miyamura, were transported to the hospital for treatment.
The severity of the crash led to a prolonged closure of the interstate, with all lanes reopening at 1:21 a.m. on Saturday, June 21. Police have identified speed as a significant contributing factor to the crash.
Wednesday afternoon, June 25, VSP said The Children’s Hospital of the Kings Daughters in Norfolk reported the 5-year-old died from her injuries. As of now, the investigation remains active and ongoing. Charges are pending further investigation and consultation with the Commonwealth’s Attorney. Virginia State Police have not revealed who may face charges and are not releasing any additional information at this time.
