Middlesex crash kills 90-year-old & daughter-in-law

The hours-long closure of Rt. 33 in Middlesex on Monday was caused by a fatal head-on collision.

Shortly before 4 p.m., 64-year-old Allen Wayne Cash was driving east on Rt. 33 in a 2014 Kia Soul, Virginia State Police reported. He was east of Rt. 17, aka Gloucester Rd., when he crossed the double-solid line and ran head on into a westbound Ford Transit van, the crash investigation found.

Cash’s front seat passenger was his 90-year-old mother, Eleanor Heath Cash. She was killed upon impact, according to VSP.

His wife, 50-year-old Donna Sue Cash, was in the back seat and suffered serious injuries that claimed her life sometime after she was taken to Walter Reed Hospital, police added.

Both of the deceased women were residents of Topping.

VSP said Mr. Cash was also transported to Walter Reed, but no assessment of his condition was provided.

The driver of the van, Sherry Rena Green-Henry of Kilmarnock, was carrying an 11-year-old passenger. Both of them were also transported to the hospital. VSP said their injuries were non-life-threatening.

Neither alcohol nor speed were factors in the crash, according to VSP. But the matter has been put before the Commonwealth’s Attorney and charges are pending that review.
