Officer injury & 2 extraditions after Henry County police chase

The sheriff’s office in Henry County, VA announced that a Sept. 21 police chase led the arrest of a passenger who was a North Carolina fugitive while the driver became a fugitive who was captured in Myrtle Beach.

The chase

At about 2:11 p.m., a deputy recognized a white Buick on Greensboro Rd. that was reportedly involved in a larceny at a local business and ran the license plate, but it came back with information that didn’t match the vehicle, Henry County Sheriff’s Office stated.

That led the deputy to attempt a traffic stop. However, the driver of the Buick accelerated to “a very high rate of speed” and, according to HCSO, “began driving in a reckless manner.”

The chase reportedly went from Greensboro Rd. to Main St. to Highway 87 where the Buick was heading toward North Carolina. At the intersection of Vista View Ln. and Hwy. 87, HCSO said one of its deputies performed the P.I.T. maneuver causing the Buick to lose traction and slide into the embankment.

Deputy injured

HCSO revealed the deputy who performed the P.I.T. maneuver was injured after getting out of the patrol vehicle to approach because “the suspect’s vehicle rolled forward and pinned the deputy’s leg between the suspect’s vehicle and his patrol vehicle.”

With the deputy pinned, the driver, who was later identified as 35-year-old Carlton Lewis Haizlip of Eden, NC got out and ran, HCSO stated.

Wanted man

Two passengers were in the car, including Ronald Haizlip who was wanted in Eden. NC for eluding. He was arrested at the scene and is currently in Henry County Adult Detention Center awaiting extradition back to North Carolina, said HCSO.

Case goes to SC

HSCO said its investigation revealed that while C. Haizlip was attempting to get away, he stole a 2006 Saturn in Ridgeway and fled to Myrtle Beach, SC.

An incident report from the Myrtle Beach Police Department explains that after they were notified of about C. Haizlip being in the area passerbys reported seeing him walking with no shirt on.

MBPD Patrolman Johnson found him near where he was reported to be. And, in addition to having the keys for the Saturn in his pocket, Haizlip also had two credit cards with a name that was not his, the MBPD report states.

C. Haizlip was transported to Myrtle Beach Jail where he is being held awaiting extradition back to Henry County, according to HCSO.

MBPD said the Saturn was found in an overflow parking lot about 2 blocks from where C. Haizlip was arrrested.

C. Haizlip’s Henry County charges include felony eluding, assault on law enforcement, and vehicle larceny.

MBPD reported filing charges for FTC theft, possession of stolen vehicle, and being a fugitive from justice.

HCSO said the injured deputy was treated at SOVA Health of Martinsville and is expected to make a full recovery.
