Montross man in Gloucester turn-over crash had no license & list of charges

The Montross man charged for the overturned log truck crash that shut down Rt. 33 in Gloucester on Nov. 21 didn’t even have a driver’s license, according to Virginia State Police.

At around 1:30 p.m. on that Thursday afternoon, 56-year-old Arthur W. Cardell was driving a 1998 International truck from Robinson’s D & B Logging in the 12000 block of History Land Hwy in Warsaw, according to the report from VSP.

Cardell was traveling southbound on Rt. 17 and when he turned onto Rt. 33 westbound, the truck turned over and logs spilled onto both sides of the highway.

Both the eastbound and westbound lanes were closed. VDOT reported that multiple wreckers were called to the scene as well as VDOT crews from the Middlesex and Gloucester headquarters.

Cardell was transported to the hospital but VSP said his injuries were non-life threatening.

For this crash, VSP said he’s charged with reckless driving, failing to maintain proper control, driving while suspended/revoked, and violation of commercial operator’s license.

And those are additions to lengthy list of charges and convictions, court records show.

Cardell was already facing a driving revoked/suspended charge in Essex ticketed on September 10. He’s scheduled to return to court for that charge in January.

On Nov. 21, the same day that he crashed in Gloucester, he was found guilty in King William of driving a commercial vehicle while disqualified and failure to obey highway markings. Those offenses were dated August 24, court records show.

In January, he was convicted of a drug possession charge in Richmond County and sentenced to 3 years with 2 years and 6 months suspended. He was supposed to be subject to 2 years of supervised probation upon his release for this offense, according to court records, which show his legal run-ins dating back years.
