USMS announce capture of triple-murder suspect in Newport News

On August 8, 2023, when Newport News Police responded to a shots fired call in the 400 block of Stallings Court, three men were found inside a residence dead.

The victims were Alvin Eugene Holiday, 61, and Monroe McGilvary Jr., 60, both from Williamsburg, along with Derek Rico Jones, a 36-year-old from Newport News.

The U.S. Marshals Service announced its Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force and Newport News Police arrested the suspect, 26-year-old Dimair Jones, of Newport News, yesterday, April 16.

Jones was taken into custody in Newport News in the 400 block of Cox Landing.

According to the USMS, from the investigation, it was determined Jones was at a hotel in Williamsburg. The day before his arrest, authorities secured arrest warrants.

On April 16th, investigators were watching Jones when he left the Williamsburg hotel and followed him to Cox Landing to the scene where he was taken into custody.

Jones was wanted for wanted for 3 counts of 1st Degree Murder, 3 counts of using a firearm in the commission of a felony, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, and discharging a firearm within a dwelling.

Jones is currently being detained at the Newport News City Jail.

“NNPD’s homicide detectives have demonstrated an unwavering commitment to solving this case. Their tireless work has not only led to today’s significant arrests but also reflects a deeper mission to ensure the safety of our community,” said NNPD Chief Steve Drew.
