Body found in York River days after Richmond man went missing

After a two-day search of the York River, on Tuesday morning, a body believed to be that of Steven Kendall Wright, a Richmond man, was discovered.

Wright vanished Sunday afternoon while swimming at Gloucester Point Beach. At approximately 10:11 a.m. on July 29, Camp Peary Police Officers aboard Marine Two spotted the body of a male floating face-down near the center of the river, roughly 0.45 miles from the Gloucester Point Fishing Pier.

The recovery occurred nearly 42 hours after Wright, 50, was seen entering the water then not resurfacing.

Emergency crews launched a rapid response after a 911 call was placed to the Gloucester County Emergency Communications Center around 4:30 p.m. on July 27.

Deputies joined forces with the Abingdon Fire & Rescue Squad, York County Department of Fire & Life Safety, Virginia Marine Police, Virginia Conservation Police, the United States Coast Guard, and Camp Peary in the initial search and rescue operation.

Efforts extended late into Sunday evening and continued through Monday as teams combed the river’s surface and shoreline.

Abingdon Fire & Rescue assisted in the recovery of the body, which has been transferred to the Tidewater Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Norfolk. Officials will confirm the identity and determine the cause and manner of death.

The Gloucester County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Division will continue to work alongside the Medical Examiner as the investigation moves forward.
