Wednesday’s traffic delays on I-95 North in Prince William ran from rush hour into the afternoon with VDOT reporting the backup being 7 miles long at one point. The cause was a fatal pedestrian crash, Virginia State Police revealed. VSP said the preliminary investigation found 69-year-old Lloyd R. Felder, of Triangle, was heading northbound in a black Toyota Tundra and pulled off on the right shoulder at the 158 mile marker. Felder got out of his vehicle, and according to VSP, he “stepped into the northbound travel lane where he was struck by an oncoming tractor-trailer.” Police said the tractor-trailer driver could not avoid striking Felder, and the man died at the scene. 95 North local lane drivers: Temporary change to access Express Lanes

The new I-95 North local lanes have started opening and are supposed to be fully opened by 4:30 a.m. tomorrow, Friday, Nov.17. After the complete opening, for about a month, the way Rt. 3 and Rt. 17 drivers access the 95 North Express Lanes will change, VDOT has noted. When drivers get on I-95 North from Rt. 3, they will be in the new local lanes. Those lanes are separated from the 95 North through lanes by a barrier. For now, the first chance these drivers will have to access the 95 North Express lanes will be north of the Exit 140 (Courthouse Road) interchange in Stafford. That’s also the case for drivers using the local lanes to travel on 95 North from Rt. 17. Access is set to change to the permanent plan by mid-December when VDOT expects to open a new flyover ramp. It will ...

To do so, the plan is to expand each side of the highway from two lanes to three lanes from mile marker 204.9 in New Kent County to mile marker 233.3 in James City County. Also, 10-foot-wide paved shoulders will be added in each direction. Adjoining parts of I-64 are already have six or more lane, and that’s why this area is referred to as “the gap,” notes VDOT. There is a lot of braking in the gap and the notorious congestion is growing, “disrupting one of Virginia’s most important thoroughfares,” the department adds. Ultimately, the widening project aims to increase capacity and mobility, alleviate congestion...
