Chemical incident in Herndon leads to evacuations, closures, & bomb squad

Homes in Herndon have been evacuated, roads shut down, and a portion of the Washington & Old Dominion Trail is closed due to an “evolving situation” involving chemical substances and other alarming evidence, Herndon Police Department announced.

The situation began to unfold this morning at around 11:30 a.m. when Herndon PD executed a search warrant on behalf of Central Bucks Regional Police Department in Pennsylvania, the department announced.

That search warrant for the 200 block of Herndon Station Square was linked to Steven Timothy Kyle, a 44-year-old Herndon man who is wanted in Pennsylvania for criminal mischief, stalking, and three counts of harassment, HPD explained.

Kyle was taken into custody without incident, but amid his arrest, HPD said detectives found chemical substances and other evidence that raised alarm and prompted the involvement of Fairfax PD’s bomb squad and the ATF Washington.

Neighboring homes were evacuated and the W&OD Trail was closed between Grace and Center, HPD announced.

Later, the department announced the closure of Grace St. between Haley and Park. At that time, HPD said hazmat crews were on scene.

In yet another update, HPD announced Fortnightly has been closed at Grace/Herndon Station Sq.
