In 2024, tolls increased for Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel + Downtown and Midtown

As of January 1, 2024 the toll for the Chesapeake Bay Bridge and Tunnel increased.

As always, the rates depend on the type of vehicle you’re driving, when you cross, and how soon, if at all, you make your return trip.

For regular, passenger vehicles and motorcycles, the off peak price is $16 and peak price is $21. A return trip within 24 hours is $6 off peak and $1 during peak.

Peak pricing applies Friday through Sunday from May 15 to September 15. For other vehicle types, here are the CBBT toll costs.

The last increase was 2019, and the Chesapeake Bay Bridge and Tunnel Commission approved rates hikes of approximately 10% every five years to support construction of the Parallel Thimble Shoal Tunnel Project.

If it’s any consolation, according to CBBT, the toll rates at 70 cents per mile for a one-way crossing, 48 cents per mile for a 24-hour roundtrip rate, and 30 cents per mile for a commuter rate, make the cost per mile for passenger cars “the lowest cost per mile for tolled marine crossings in the region.”

Downtown & Midtown Tunnels

Effective January 1, the toll rates for the Downtown and Midtown tunnels also increased.

The rates depend on whether you’re driving a passenger vehicle or heavy vehicle, which includes vehicles towing a trailer. The rate also depends on the time of day and whether you’re using an E-ZPass, which makes the crossing a lot cheaper.

For example, during the peak hours of 5:30 – 9 a.m. the toll rates for E-ZPass drivers went up 16 cents to $2.26. But for Pay by Plate drivers, the cost jumped 49 cents to $6.77 each way.

Toll Relief Increased

If you live in Hampton Roads and use the Downtown or Midtown Tunnels, don’t forget to consider toll relief, which offers 50% off.

In late October, the income qualifications expanded from a limit of $50,000 to $65,000. And the savings expanded from 10 trips a week to 14 trips.

You have to have or open an E-ZPass account, and the discount will only apply with passenger vehicles. You also must prove you live in:

  • Chesapeake
  • Gloucester County
  • Hampton
  • Isle of Wight County
  • James City County
  • Newport News
  • Norfolk
  • Poquoson
  • Portsmouth
  • Suffolk
  • Virginia Beach
  • Williamsburg
  • York County
  • Franklin
  • Surry County
  • Southampton
