Lane closures & delays coming to Norris Bridge

Prepare for nighttime traffic delays when crossing the Robert O. Norris Jr. Bridge, also known as the White Stone Bridge, as VDOT will begin a rehabilitation project on March 31.

VDOT said the work on the bridge, which carries Rt. 3 between Lancaster and Middlesex, will involve closures and drivers should expect delays.

During the project, workers will be strengthening and replacing structural steel elements on the bridge. The first two weeks will be used to take measurements and assess the materials needed for the forthcoming repairs.

Lane closures during those two weeks will be:

  • Monday – Friday, Midnight – 6 a.m. and 7 p.m. – Midnight
  • Saturday – Sunday, Midnight – 9 a.m. and 9 p.m. – Midnight

Then, according to VDOT, it will likely take approximately a month to make and ship the steel elements back to the bridge for the replacement work to begin.

Work will be underway during the day and night once the steel work begins. During the day, there will be barges in the river, but they won’t impede other vessels, VDOT said.

The work will require completely stopping traffic flow over the bridge during certain points of the project for15 minutes intervals between midnight and 3 a.m. VDOT said advance notice will be provided.

The project is expected to be complete by September 2026.
