Man arrested and charged for setting fires in Chesterfield

Chesterfield Fire Marshal’s Office believes the fires found along Iron Bridge Road on Monday were intentionally set.

Just before 5 p.m. fire and EMS crews were dispatched for a report of a brush fire along Rt. 10 near Kingsland Rd.

When firefighters arrived on the scene, they found two separate fires, one on each side of the road, Chesterfield authorities reported.

To help gain control of the incident, Chesterfield Fire said it called in additional units and resources, including a bulldozer from the Virginia Department of Forestry.

Both fires were marked under control at 6:18 p.m. But, in total, between two and three acres were burned, the department reported.

Chesterfield Fire Marshal’s Office charged 26-year-old Yahaya Kamyuka with two counts of burning woods. Several witnesses reported seeing the suspect in the area where the fires started, Chesterfield Fire said.

Kamyuka, who is listed in court records as a North Chesterfield resident, was tracked down and arrested. He is being held at the Chesterfield County Jail.

His arraignment was conducted yesterday, and his next court appearance is scheduled for September 10.

The Chesterfield Fire Marshal’s Office is still investigating both fires.
