A Chase City man is being held without bond after allegedly making armed threats at Baskerville Correctional Center, a rural state prison for men.
According to the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded shortly after midnight on Friday, November 28, to reports of a man with a gun trespassing in the parking lot of the facility.

Upon arrival, deputies encountered Donovan Simpson, who was armed with a handgun and reportedly making threats of “suicide by cop.”


Deputy Carroll initiated crisis-negotiation techniques while Deputies Towery and Aston provided support. Within minutes, officers engaged in de-escalation efforts, but after a brief struggle, a Taser was deployed. Simpson was taken into custody without further injury or incident.
He was transported to the Meherrin River Regional Jail, where he is being held on charges of carrying a concealed weapon, obstruction of justice, breaking and entering with intent to commit a felony, and public intoxication.
