NKSO said during construction for the I-64 widening project there has been an increase in fatal accidents in New Kent and the new speeding initiative is an effort to save driver and construction workers lives.

On July 1, a warning period went into effect. Drivers caught exceeding the construction zone speed limit by 11 miles per hour or more will get a mailed warning, detailing the time and date of the infraction.
These warnings carry no fines but serve as signal for drivers to slow down because the photo enforcement is in effect.
The enforcement system uses a truck-mounted LiDAR camera that can accurately monitor each lane of traffic. Unlike conventional radar tools, LiDAR pinpoints individual vehicles and their speeds, ensuring that only true violators are flagged, according to NKSO
Starting August 1, the warnings are over and drivers violating the work zone speed limit by 11 miles are more will receive tickets in the mail.
