Portsmouth now using speed cameras near schools

Drivers near Portsmouth schools, take note that speeding could be pricey. The City has implemented an automated traffic enforcement program aka speed cameras.

Portsmouth PD said the speed cameras will enforce the speed limit on school days when classes are in session. Enforcement times are from 30 minutes before the start of school until 30 minutes after dismissal.

PPD said citations will only be issued if a vehicle is more than 10 mph over the posted speed limit, and every school zone that is subject to photo enforcement is supposed to have signs displaying the speed limit and signs disclosing the use of speed cameras.

Each citation will cost $100 dollars.

Speed enforcement cameras will be used at:

  • I.C. Norcom High School
  • Douglass Park Elementary School
  • Lakeview Elementary School
  • Churchland Middle School
  • Brighton Elementary School
  • S.H. Clarke Academy
  • Simonsdale Elementary School

PPD said the warning period started on Oct. 30.
