Prepare: traffic stops and lane closures through late August

Drivers who use the Falmouth Bridge to travel between Fredericksburg and Stafford in the evenings, be advised. Delays and closures are scheduled for the days ahead.

Starting today, Monday, Aug.19 and running through Thursday, Aug. 29, from 7 p.m. – 7 a.m., there will be single-lane closures. Those closures will be imposed in alternating directions.

Also, overnight between 9 p.m. and 5:30 a.m. on Aug. 22-23 and Aug. 27-28, there will be intermittent full traffic stops for up to 15 minutes each.

According to VDOT, these measures are needed to conduct live load tests on the bridge.

Sensors will be placed on the bridge to measure the bridge’s response to vehicles of various weights. The intermittent traffic stops are necessary to allow trucks loaded to a specific weight to cross the bridge separately from general traffic, VDOT noted.

The Falmouth Bridge was built in 1943, and VDOT said design work is underway to conduct a major rehabilitation that’s scheduled to start in FY 29.
