Within days, Suffolk Police arrested suspects in two unrelated shootings, and both arrests were made possible due to help from the community.
Micheal McKinley Jr. who Suffolk Police Department as its “#1 most wanted” was arrested on December 11.
Suffolk Police named the 22-year-old as the suspect in a shooting incident that occurred on November 29 in the 100 block of Kennet Drive. SPD alleges he shot at two people in a vehicle and an occupied dwelling. No one was injured during this incident, but McKinley already had numerous active violent felony warrants including charges of attempted murder and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, the department announced.
SPD described McKinley as armed and dangerous and called on the public for assistance locating him. After his arrest yesterday, SPD publicly thanked the community for their assistance.
Days earlier, on December 8, SPD announced they’d charged 24-year-old Tremonte Smith, of Chesapeake, with felonies, including 2nd degree murder, use of a firearm in commission of a felony, and discharging a firearm in an occupied building. Those charges stemmed from a shooting at a church earlier that day.
According to SPD, shortly after noon, its Emergency Communications Center received a call for gunshots fired in the 6300 block of Whaleyville Boulevard.
When officers arrived on the scene, it was determined Smith, who was reportedly known at Divine Church of Deliverance and Transformation came in during service hours looking a staff member who was on the premises. SPD said the suspect fired one shot at the staff member he was looking for but the individual was not injured.
SPD said bystanders in the church detained Smith until police arrived allowing officers to immediately take him into custody without further incident.
