Ridgeway man allegedly shoots at wife during domestic dispute

A Ridgeway man is being held in the Henry County Adult Detention Center without bond after an incident where he allegedly added a gun to the mix during a domestic dispute.

Last Wednesday, Sept. 18, there was an altercation between Richard John Smith and his wife, Jeanie Hawks Smith on Wright Rd. in Ridgeway, Henry County Sheriff’s Office stated.

In the midst of that dispute, R. Smith allegedly got a gun and, first, brandished it and threatened his wife and brother-in-law, Jimmy Hawks, said HCSO.

But then, according to HCSO, R. Smith shot at the siblings and held them in a room, preventing them from leaving. R. Smith reportedly demanded his wife’s phone and threatened to shoot her if she didn’t give it up.

J. Smith and her brother were reportedly held for nearly 30 minutes before they were able to leave the residence and contact police, HCSO said.

Deputies and investigators were dispatched to the scene and an investigation was launched.

HCSO said R. Smith was arrested without incident and is charged with:

  • Shooting, stabbing with intent to maim, kill, etc.
  • Abduction and kidnapping
  • Use of a firearm in the commission of a felony
  • Shooting into an occupied dwelling
  • Robbery
