Rookie K-9 applauded for role in catching wanted man with stolen vehicle

On May 20, 2025, K-9 Grit, a rookie, from the York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office (YPSO), played a key role in capturing 38-year-old Travis Inman, a wanted man who was allegedly spotted in a stolen vehicle.

James City County Police Department (JCCPD) said they received a Be on the Lookout (BOLO) from Hampton Police after a Flock Safety camera detected a stolen vehicle in James City County.

A few hours later, a JCCPD officer located the vehicle at the Woods of Williamsburg apartment complex on Tilghman Court. As officers processed the scene, they spotted a man matching the description of the suspect who was wanted in Hampton and Newport News.

As they approached him, he ran into to the woods near Longhill Road and Lafayette Boulevard, prompting a foot chase.

Suspecting the man may be armed, JCCPD called in their Drone Team, K-9 Maverick with Officer Crockett, and YPSO’s K-9 Grit with Sgt. Schultz.

K-9 Maverick initiated the tracking through the woods then K-9 Grit took over.

Within minutes, K-9 Grit located the suspect, according to JCCPD. Inman allegedly attempted to get away again, launching a second chase across Longhill Road. But according to JCCPD, after a brief period, he surrendered.

Inman, who was wanted in Hampton and Newport News, was transported to the Virginia Peninsula Regional Jail.

He faces charges from Hampton, including assault and battery, grand larceny, reckless driving, driving without a license, contributing to the delinquency of a minor, and contempt of court. Additionally, he faces a misdemeanor charge from Newport News for destruction of property under $1,000.

JCCPD and YPSO applauded the work of K-9 Grit noting this was his first deployment. He had just been certified after 6 months of training that ended on May 1.
