Spotsylvania adding speed cameras near schools

With over half of the drivers on the road speeding through the school zone near Battlefield Middle School, Spotsylvania is adding speed cameras in school zones throughout the County.

The decision is a joint effort between the Sheriff’s Office, School Board, and Board of Supervisors.

According to the County, this decision was referring after multiple speed studies were done showing “consistently dangerous driving behavior during school hours, particularly near Battlefield Middle School. “

“On a single weekday morning, 2,179 drivers were recorded speeding through the school zone at Battlefield Middle School located on Leavells Road. That’s 58% of all vehicles on that road during school hours,” said Spotsylvania County Sheriff Roger L. Harris. “These aren’t just numbers, this is a daily threat to the safety of our students.”

Costs & Benefits

Violations will not add points to a person’s driving record. The cost of the program is reportedly being covered by fines from violations, so “there’s no cost to taxpayers.” In fact, according to the County, the money that’s generated from the photo speed program “will be reinvested back into the community for safety initiatives, thereby reducing the financial burden of taxpayers, and helping to keep tax rates low.”

“The safety of our students, staff and the community at large is our No. 1 priority,” said Dr. Clint M. Mitchell, Superintendent of Spotsylvania County Public Schools. “This proactive safety measure is another process to help keep everyone safe in our school zones.”
