Hampton Roads part of new federal effort for domestic violence crack down

This month marked the 30th anniversary of the federal Violence Against Women Act. At an event to celebrate the occasion, U.S Attorney General Merrick B. Garland announced a new effort to reduce intimate partner violence involving guns. Garland announced that 78 communities across the U.S. and its territories have been selected as the initial focus of this effort. In Virginia, the focus is on Chesapeake, Norfolk, Portsmouth, and Virginia Beach. This effort involves having U.S. Attorney’s Offices and the ATF partner with local jurisdictions to develop a plan that reduces domestic firearms violence and prioritizes prosecutions of domestic violence offenders prohibited from owning firearms, the Justice Dept. announced. The Hampton Roads communities selected for this initiative ar...

Man pleads guilty to 50 theft-related offenses in Wise County

“If Wise County had a ‘Best of the Best’ award for thieving, the award would go to Mickey Hollyfield,” said Brett Hall, Commonwealth’s Attorney for Wise County and the City of Norton. That comment came after Hollyfield, a 39-year-old from Pound, pled guilty to 50 counts of theft-related crimes on Sept. 9. Those offenses include: Grand larceny (x8) Petit larceny (x10) Forgery (x11) Conspiracy to commit forgery (x10) Uttering (x10) Possession of stolen property (x1) All of these offenses were committed in the first half of 2023. According to Hall, between January and June last year, Hollyfield committed a string of thefts that included taking a large amount of personal property from people in the Pound area and eastern Kentucky. Residents around the 200 block of Herndon Station Square were cleared to return to their homes last night after an hours-long evacuation prompted by what police found in the home of Steven Timothy Kyle, a 44-year-old Herndon man wanted in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. Authorities concluded that the items-- which still haven’t been named--pose no threat to the community Herndon Police Captain Steve Pihonak said at a press conference last night. Initially, Herndon Police described what they found in Kyle’s townhouse as “chemical substances and other evidence that raised alarm.” Hours later, at an evening press conference, Pihonak said authorities were still working the scene. “It’s serious enough that that’s why we’ve closed the area all around,” he added. But later that night, whe...

VA pharmacist gets 2 years in federal prison for tampering with opioids at CVS

A pharmacist who worked at CVS in Gate City has been sentenced to 2 years in federal prison for drug tampering in a scheme that involved stealing narcotics and replacing them without other medications. Dillion Breeding, 34, pled guilty to one count of tampering with consumer products after he admitted that while he was pharmacist, he stole oxymorphone, morphine, hydromorphone, and testosterone, federal court documents show. He used two methods to obtain the pills. In some cases, while counting out medications with a spatula, he would hide a pill in his hand then take it by mouth, he admitted. In some instances, he stated he shorted patients when he was dispensing their prescriptions. Court documents show Breeding’s theft was uncovered because the pharmacy manager was filling an ox...
