Crash & fire caused shutdown on Rt. 288 in Chesterfield

Traffic delays around midday on Rt. 288 South in Chesterfield were caused by a crash near Watkins Center Parkway that sparked a fire and shut down all of the travel lanes. Around 11:30 a.m. a tractor-trailer and an SUV collided and a power line was hit, according to Virginia State Police. The toppled pole left power lines in the highway. Chesterfield Fire and EMS reported that one car got tangled in the power lines and an individual inside required assistance getting out. No one was injured, and there were no reports of any vehicles catching on fire. Traffic detoured on Rt. 602 on Eastern Shore until 2025

Eastern Shore drivers should be aware that, as of Monday, January 29, the portion of Rt. 602 between Belle Haven Road and east of Darby’s Wharf Lane is closed to through traffic. There is a detour in place that will direct motorists traveling from Accomack County to follow Route 178 (Belle Haven Road) to Route 13 (Lankford Highway) to Route 183 (Occohannock Neck Road) to Route 602 (Cemetery Road). The route is reversed for those traveling from Northampton County. Lane closure scheduled on Coleman Bridge Sunday

This weekend, VDOT contractors are scheduled to work on the George P. Coleman Memorial Bridge, which carries Rt. 17 between Gloucester and York counties. Drivers may want to factor in additional travel time on Sunday, Jan. 28. There will be a single-lane closure scheduled on from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., weather permitting. Marine traffic that requires bridge openings will also be impacted. Between 8 a.m. and as late as 8 p.m., all bridge openings will be restricted. Work and successful testing will need to be completed before the reopenings resume, noted VDOT. Vessels that don’t require a bridge open can continue using the channel as usual. 80-year-old Emporia woman killed by Greensville County crash

An 80-year-old Emporia woman was killed in a single-vehicle crash on Tuesday, Virginia State Police reported. The incident occurred on Low Ground Rd. just south of Little Low Ground Rd. in Greensville County. According to VSP, the investigation revealed Merle Marie Thorpe, was traveling southbound and, for an undisclosed reason, she crossed into the northbound lanes. The woman then ran off the road, and the 2005 Chevy Impala she was driving crashed into a tree stump before flipped over leaving, said VSP. Thorpe, the sole occupant, was entrapped in the vehicle and was suffering from "serious life-threatening injuries," accord to VSP. Woman wanted for fatal Norfolk crash now in custody

Dominique Goodwin, the Chesapeake woman wanted for the fatal wrong-way tunnel crash in Norfolk, turned herself in Monday morning, VSP reported. Goodwin was wanted for aggravated involuntary manslaughter after an incident in the early hours of December 30. According to VSP, she was driving her Volkswagen eastbound in the westbound lanes of the Downtown Tunnel when she crashed head-on with a Chevy Equinox driven by Shelby Riddick Walker of Portsmouth. Riddick, 43, was killed instantly, authorities say. Virginia State Police had been looking for Goodwin for weeks to no avail. They had even issued a public appeal for information on her whereabouts. Woman unidentifiable after Isle of Wight crash

The extent of the injuries in an Isle of Wight crash Tuesday night left Virginia State Police unable to positively identify the driver, VSP announced. It was just after 11 p.m. when VSP was informed that there was a single vehicle on Brewers Neck Boulevard north of Newton Haven Lane in Carrolton. Based on its preliminary investigations, VSP said it was determined that the woman, who authorities are currently calling Jane Doe, was traveling northbound on Brewers Neck Boulevard, when she lost control of the vehicle. She ran off the road, struck a ditch, and when the 2004 Ford Taurus hit the ditch, it flipped over several times, said VSP. 2 fatal crashes claim Brunswick County residents

In Brunswick County, there have been two fatal tree crash accidents within less than a week, both involving county residents. Virginia State Police reported a crash on Smokey Ordinary Rd. that occurred on January 13, around 7 p.m. Based on VSP’s preliminary investigations, it was determined that 42-year-old Allen Stephen Kidd was heading east and was east of Rt.712 when he lost control of a 2007 Honda Accord, ran off the road, and crashed into a tree. Kidd, a resident of Dolphin, was not wearing his seatbelt, but alcohol was not a factor, VSP stated. Trailer fire shuts down portion of Rt. 267 in Loudoun County

A portion of Rt. 267 eastbound was shut down for hours today, January 17, due to a trailer fire. Virginia State Police said troopers were dispatched to the scene at 9:22 a.m. A tractor-trailer had pulled over on the right shoulder approaching the Exit 2 ramp for Battlefield Parkway. According to VSP, heavy smoke coming from the rear axle of the trailer prompted the driver to stop. He was able to disconnect the trailer and separate the cab, but the flames spread through the trailer before they could be extinguished. The driver was not injured, VSP reported. Delays coming on Downing Bridge to and from Tappahannock

Drivers on Rt. 360 crossing the Downing Bridge between Tappahannock and Richmond County should brace for about 6 weeks of delays. VDOT announced a maintenance project will begin tomorrow, January 9, that will include repairing the bridge’s aluminum railing and concrete deck. That work will reduce the two-lane bridge to a single lane with traffic alternating between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. and 9 p.m. and 7 a.m. Automated flagging devices will direct the  traffic through the work zone. VDOT said there will not be lane closures on weekends. Weather permitting, the work is expected to be complete by March 2024. Highway and marine closures ahead for James River Bridge

Preliminary lane closures and traffic stoppages on the Route 17 James River Bridge were scheduled to start today, January 6, to prepare for a 4-day full closure of the bridge. January full shutdown VDOT announced that a critical maintenance project is needed that will replace 40 of the 80 counterweight wire ropes that lift the bridge for marine traffic. That work will require full closure of the bridge from Friday, January 12, at 1 a.m. through Tuesday, January 16, at 5 a.m. Ahead of the shutdown, there will be a single-lane in both directions that's slated to start as early as 7 p.m. on January 11.
