Stringfellow Rd. in Fairfax closing this weekend

Stringfellow Road in Fairfax will be closing this weekend to allow for the installation of a water main. The northbound and southbound lanes of Rt. 645, Stringfellow Rd., between Route 29 and Centreville Farms Road are scheduled to close at 7 a.m Saturday, Feb. 17, until 5 p.m. Monday, Feb. 19, VDOT announced. Local traffic can still use Stringfellow Road between Centreville Farms Road and Autumn Willow Drive. But, Stringfellow Road will be closed to all traffic in both directions between Autumn Willow Drive and Route 29. Through traffic will be detoured via Route 29 and Centreville Farms Road back to Stringfellow Road. Virginia State Police release name of unidentified pedestrian killed in Augusta

Virginia State Police were calling on the public to help identify a white male killed along Rt. 11 in Augusta. That man has now been identified as Tony L. Epperson, age 37, of West Augusta. According to VSP, at midnight, on February 9, Trooper A.J Garasimowicz was dispatched to the scene of a fatal pedestrian crash along Route 11 north at the Interstate 81 northbound entrance ramp in Greenville. A vehicle was attempting to merge onto the I-81 ramp and hit the man who was “walking in the roadway.” Epperson was wearing all-black, non-reflective clothing that included a hoodie, cargo-style pants, and black sneakers. VSP launching special operation on Interstate 66 for Super Bowl weekend

Drivers be advised, this weekend Virginia State Police are launching a traffic enforcement operation on Interstate 66 targeting those they consider to be risky drivers. VSP has issued advanced warning that people should line up their designated drivers for the Super Bowl. Over the next few days, troopers will not only be out on I-66, they'll be out in numbers. “The weekend of the Super Bowl is an excellent time to tackle bad driving behaviors,” said Lt. Col. Matt Hanley, director of the Virginia State Police Bureau of Field Operations. According to VSP, troopers from the Fairfax and Culpeper Divisions are going to partner on Operation DISS-rupt, which will run from February 10-12 and will cover all 76 miles of Interstate 66. Manassas man ejected, killed in I-81 crash in Shenandoah

A two-vehicle accident on I-81 in Shenandoah County proved fatal for an ejected passenger. The incident occurred Monday, January 29, at 6 p.m. at the 289 mile marker, Virginia State Police reported. A 2015 Ford F350 experienced a driver’s side blowout, which caused the truck to run off the right side of the road, flip, and hit the guardrail. Wilson R. Acosta Zelaya, a 21-year-old of Springfield, was in the backseat and was not wearing a seatbelt, VSP stated. He was thrown from the vehicle into roadway and was hit by a Kenworth tractor-trailer. Crash & fire caused shutdown on Rt. 288 in Chesterfield

Traffic delays around midday on Rt. 288 South in Chesterfield were caused by a crash near Watkins Center Parkway that sparked a fire and shut down all of the travel lanes. Around 11:30 a.m. a tractor-trailer and an SUV collided and a power line was hit, according to Virginia State Police. The toppled pole left power lines in the highway. Chesterfield Fire and EMS reported that one car got tangled in the power lines and an individual inside required assistance getting out. No one was injured, and there were no reports of any vehicles catching on fire. However, the powerlines sparked a brush fire that burned about 2 acres along the highway, stated Chesterfield Fire and EMS, which was assisted by Powhatan County Fire and Rescue. Traffic detoured on Rt. 602 on Eastern Shore until 2025

Eastern Shore drivers should be aware that, as of Monday, January 29, the portion of Rt. 602 between Belle Haven Road and east of Darby’s Wharf Lane is closed to through traffic. There is a detour in place that will direct motorists traveling from Accomack County to follow Route 178 (Belle Haven Road) to Route 13 (Lankford Highway) to Route 183 (Occohannock Neck Road) to Route 602 (Cemetery Road). The route is reversed for those traveling from Northampton County. Rt. 602 detour between Accomack and Northampton counties According to VDOT, the detour is expected to remain in place until late spring 2025. Lane closure scheduled on Coleman Bridge Sunday

This weekend, VDOT contractors are scheduled to work on the George P. Coleman Memorial Bridge, which carries Rt. 17 between Gloucester and York counties. Drivers may want to factor in additional travel time on Sunday, Jan. 28. There will be a single-lane closure scheduled on from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., weather permitting. Marine traffic that requires bridge openings will also be impacted. Between 8 a.m. and as late as 8 p.m., all bridge openings will be restricted. Work and successful testing will need to be completed before the reopenings resume, noted VDOT. Vessels that don’t require a bridge open can continue using the channel as usual. 80-year-old Emporia woman killed by Greensville County crash

An 80-year-old Emporia woman was killed in a single-vehicle crash on Tuesday, Virginia State Police reported. The incident occurred on Low Ground Rd. just south of Little Low Ground Rd. in Greensville County. According to VSP, the investigation revealed Merle Marie Thorpe, was traveling southbound and, for an undisclosed reason, she crossed into the northbound lanes. The woman then ran off the road, and the 2005 Chevy Impala she was driving crashed into a tree stump before flipped over leaving, said VSP. Thorpe, the sole occupant, was entrapped in the vehicle and was suffering from "serious life-threatening injuries," accord to VSP. Woman wanted for fatal Norfolk crash now in custody

Dominique Goodwin, the Chesapeake woman wanted for the fatal wrong-way tunnel crash in Norfolk, turned herself in Monday morning, VSP reported. Goodwin was wanted for aggravated involuntary manslaughter after an incident in the early hours of December 30. According to VSP, she was driving her Volkswagen eastbound in the westbound lanes of the Downtown Tunnel when she crashed head-on with a Chevy Equinox driven by Shelby Riddick Walker of Portsmouth. Riddick, 43, was killed instantly, authorities say. Virginia State Police had been looking for Goodwin for weeks to no avail. They had even issued a public appeal for information on her whereabouts. Woman unidentifiable after Isle of Wight crash

The extent of the injuries in an Isle of Wight crash Tuesday night left Virginia State Police unable to positively identify the driver, VSP announced. It was just after 11 p.m. when VSP was informed that there was a single vehicle on Brewers Neck Boulevard north of Newton Haven Lane in Carrolton. Based on its preliminary investigations, VSP said it was determined that the woman, who authorities are currently calling Jane Doe, was traveling northbound on Brewers Neck Boulevard, when she lost control of the vehicle. She ran off the road, struck a ditch, and when the 2004 Ford Taurus hit the ditch, it flipped over several times, said VSP.
