Virginia Beach Police shoot & charge teen with fake gun

An 18-year-old has been hospitalized and is in critical condition after being shot by Virginia Beach Police.

According to the Virginia Beach Police Department (VBPD), officers were dispatched to the 4600 block of Honeygrove Rd. on June 4 at approximately 8:41 a.m. after an individual reported that someone had pointed a gun at them.

Officers located the suspect, later identified as Shaun Marlar of Virginia Beach, who was armed with a handgun, VBPD announced.

The department stated that responding officers ordered Marlar to drop the weapon. Instead, he pointed the pistol at the officers, who then fired and shot him.

VBPD reported that the recovered handgun was “a replica.”

Marlar was transported to the hospital and is in critical but stable condition, VBPD stated.

He is facing two counts of assault on a law enforcement officer and three counts of brandishing a weapon.

VBPD said no officers were injured. Those involved are on temporary Critical Incident Leave, which is standard policy.

The VBPD Detective Bureau is conducting one of two criminal investigations into this incident. Upon completion, all evidence obtained by VBPD will be submitted to the Virginia Beach Office of the Commonwealth’s Attorney (OCA), which will review the facts and circumstances for compliance with the law.

The OCA will conduct its own parallel, independent criminal investigation. Upon conclusion of both criminal investigations, the VBPD Internal Affairs Unit will conduct an administrative review to determine compliance with department policy, procedure, and training, VBPD said.
