VSP explains how dump truck crashed over side of I-664 overpass in Suffolk

Although the investigation is still underway, Virginia State Police provided details about how a dump truck went off an I-664 overpass in Suffolk and crashed down on Bridge Rd.

At around 11:30 a.m., 20-year-old William Carl Moore was driving an unloaded Western Star dump truck northbound on I-664. A tire exploded causing Moore to lose control, and he ran off the road and hit the jersey wall, VSP said.

The collision with the jersey wall reportedly tore the axle and caused the truck to go over the side of the overpass, and it landed on Bridge Road.

When the truck hit the ground, it burst into flames and became fully engulfed, VSP said.

Smoke from the truck fire affected traffic on I-664 in both directions. Bridge Rd. was shut down in both directions.

VSP said Moore was not injured.
