2 pedestrians killed on I-495 in Fairfax in separate incidents

Virginia State Police were dispatched to two fatal pedestrian crashes in Fairfax County today within a half-hour. The incidents were in close proximity but are unrelated, police say.

Incident #1

The call for the first incident came in at 3:39 a.m.

VSP said, at present, it appears that the unnamed individual was on the shoulder of the westbound lanes of I-495 east of Exit 176 changing a tire and got hit by a truck.

The individual changing the tire died at the scene.

The unnamed driver of the truck was transported to the hospital.

VSP said its Fairfax Division Crash Reconstruction Team is assisting with the investigation, and charges are pending.

Incident #2

At 3:53 a.m., VSP found a pedestrian in the eastbound lanes of I-495 near Exit 176.

Witnesses reported the unnamed female stumbled into oncoming traffic and was hit. She also died at the scene, VSP stated.

Authorities didn’t disclose whether the vehicle involved remained at the scene.

That crash is under investigation and the Crash Reconstruction Team is also assisting with that incident.
