According to VSP, the incident was a single-vehicle crash. The truck driver was traveling southbound on Route 17 when, just north of the Raceway, he ran off the right side of the road into a marshy area, striking several power poles and utility lines. The impact caused power outages affecting both the James River Bridge and the Carrollton area.

VDOT responded to the scene and coordinated with the Isle of Wight Sheriff’s Office to implement a road closure on the Newport News side of the bridge. A detour was set up to redirect southbound traffic from the James River Bridge at Mercury Boulevard, with drivers advised to use the Monitor-Merrimac Memorial Bridge-Tunnel instead.
The southbound lanes of the James River Bridge remained closed for approximately eight hours and fully reopened around 4:10 a.m.
As of now, VSP has not released information regarding the cause of the crash, the condition of the driver, or whether any charges are pending.
