A Leesburg man is facing a list of charges in Loudoun and Fairfax after an abduction call led to a police chase went from Ashburn to the Tysons Corner area.
On Oct. 30, just before 2 p.m., Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office said a citizen called and reported what was believed to be an abduction in progress. When deputies arrived, the suspect drove away in a black Hummer and headed north on Loudoun County Parkway.
Despite officers having their emergency equipment activated, the driver disregarded the deputies attempts to stop him and continued into Fairfax, LCSO stated. At that point, Fairfax and Virginia State Police joined the pursuit.
Overhead footage from Fairfax PD shows a portion of the pursuit, including a segment where the Hummer is driving on the wrong side of the road amid oncoming traffic. The Hummer continued on I-495 North past Tysons Blvd. During this pursuit, the subject struck multiple vehicle, LCSO stated.
It was 2:45 p.m. when the man stopped the Hummer at Chain Bridge and Flint Hill Rd., LCSO also noted. Video footage shows him hop out of the Hummer shirtless and run down the road. He approaches a vehicle and appears to be attempting to open the door. A member of the surveillance team can be heard announcing that he is trying to carjack someone.
The shirtless man continues running down the road through traffic and police close in on foot and tackle him in the middle of the road.
The man was later identified as 44-year-old Joseph Christopher Daniel.
The 2005 Hummer he was driving was stolen on March 16 in Chantilly. When it was taken, it was green but had been repainted black, LCSO revealed.
Daniel had outstanding warrants in Loudoun County when he arrested for two counts of possession of stolen property; possession of burglary tools; fleeing & eluding; driving without a License; and three counts of probation violation.
For the incident on the day of the police chase, Loudoun charged Daniel with felony eluding, reckless driving, driving revoked/suspended, failure to obey traffic signal, and failure to stop/yield.
Fairfax added charges for carjacking, felony disregarding police command to stop, felony hit and run, driving without a license, and reckless driving.
Loudoun police said they are still investigating the circumstances surrounding the initial abduction call.
None of the people involved in the hit and run incidents were injured, LCSO confirmed.
