Gov. Glenn Youngkin unveiled new state resources Monday aiming to connect job seekers with job opportunities and provide the pathway forward for federal workers facing job loss. Speaking at an event held at the Capitol One headquarters in McLean, the governor “the evolution of opportunity in the Commonwealth. It has been unlocked and there is an open door to walk through to take advantage of it. Poquoson woman charged for drug smuggling attempt at Haynesville Correctional Center

Today, Virginia Department of Corrections announced a Poquoson woman is facing a felony drug distribution charge after a foiled smuggling attempt at Haynesville Correctional Center last fall. On November 22, Kristyn Nicole Mazzariello came to the Haynesville facility to visit a family member for an inmate graduation, reported VADOC. She was stopped, asked to submit to a drug and contraband scan by a VADOC K-9, and the K-9 altered authorities to Mazzariello’s body and inside her vehicle, the department stated. Mazzariello admitted to having drugs and turned over three packages that were previously concealed on her body, which had 90 Buprenorphine and Naloxone strips and 7 synthetic marijuana papers, VADOC reported. With the manhunt approaching two weeks, the U.S. Marshals Service announced a reward up to $7,000 for escapee John Matthew Nigh. Nigh, a 37-year-old white male, is wanted for escaping from the Craven County Detention Facility in North Carolina. USMS labeled him armed and dangerous and said he has an extensive criminal history including attempted murder of law enforcement, drugs, and weapons charges. According to Craven County Sheriff’s Office, detention officers discovered Nigh was missing from his cell at 4 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 26. A high-speed chase on I-64 yesterday ended in a crash and the arrest of a suspect wanted for federal gun charges, Virginia State Police revealed. The incident began around 4:51 p.m. when law enforcement officers attempted to pull over a 2011 Chevrolet Camaro for improper registration. Alexandria Police Department announced three juveniles have been charged for the Sept. 19, 2024, shooting on Wythe Street, an incident with three victims, including one who died. “This crime was planned, deliberate, and it was violent,” APD Chief Tarrick McGuire said during a press conference. The three males, who at the time were ages 16 – 17, approached on foot and opened fire, he explained. A 25-year-old man in what is believed to be the shooters’ “target area” was shot and killed. A 34-year-old man from Stuart had to be airlifted to the hospital after getting shot while allegedly busting his way into an elderly man’s home. Patrick County Sheriff Dan Smith reported that James Hazelwood, a 78-year-old who lives on Big A School Road in Stuart, called 911 just after 8:30 a.m. on January 23 to report a man with an iron pipe was outside beating his vehicle. That man, identified as Griffith Coy Goodyear, of Salem Highway also in Stuart, then proceeded to use the pipe to beat the residence and busted out several windows, Smith said Hazelwood reported. Bloomberg Government described it as “the largest tax code overhaul in nearly three decades.” One thing the TCJA did was to nearly double the standard deduction for federal income taxes. The federal standard deduction for single filers went from $6,350 to $14,600. For married couples filing jointly, the figure rose from $12,700 to $29,200. In 2019, Virginia began raising its standard deduction. A report from the Department of Taxation explained that was done in response to the TCJA. Virginia State Police are still searching for 38-year-old Victor A. Caneza who was reportedly involved in two crashes and a police chase in Fairfax on Monday before making a getaway. According to VSP, it was approximately 2:40 p.m. and troopers were working two accidents along Interstate 495 East near Eisenhower Ave when a third crash occurred involving two vehicles. A trooper assigned to the third crash asked the two vehicles to move from the left to the right shoulder as authorities attempted to consolidate all the crash scenes. Six days after 17-year-old Mitchell Harrison Leahey disappeared in Henrico County, VA authorities said he was found safe in Florida. His parents told WTVR CBS 6 they picked him up from work and went to a family therapy session that “kicked up some hard stuff and he was upset and left.” The couple claimed they chased Leahey “for a while” but he hopped a fence and was gone. Leahey who reportedly worked as a counselor at Oak Hill Christian Service Camp, had “nothing on him. No phone, wallet, no debit card, no cash, not even a jacket,” his parents said.
