Hikers rescued from 2 different VA mountains within 24 hours

Med-Flight 1 conducted two hiker rescue missions within 24 hours from two different Virginia mountains. The first hoist operation came on Monday, March 31, after the National Park Service notified Med-Flight 1 of a hiker in distress on Old Rag Mountain in Shenandoah National Park. The chopper flew from its base in Chesterfield approximately 80 nautical miles to the rescue site in Madison County.  Lt. A Caroline Middle School student is being held in detention after being arrested on charges for threats of violence, Caroline County Sheriff’s Office reported. The incident was uncovered by CMS students who reportedly overheard the suspect talking about threats of violence that would occur at the school after spring break. Those students reported what they heard, according to School Resource Officer Deputy I. Deitz. Their report prompted a “thorough” joint investigation that included Deitz and Caroline Schools’ staff.   Caroline County Juvenile Intake found the situation warranted issuing charges against the student in question. The former federal prosecutor Jessica Aber was found dead on Friday morning, March 22. Alexandria Police Department said officers responded to a call of an unresponsive woman in the 900 block of Beverley Drive—a residential neighborhood—and found Aber, 43, was dead. APD said they are still investigating the circumstances of her death and awaiting the Medical Examiner’s Office to determine the cause and manner of her death. Scott Jenkins, a former Sheriff of Culpeper County, was sentenced to 10 years in federal prison for his role in a buy-a-badge scheme where individuals paid him to be appointed auxiliary deputy sheriff in his department. According to evidence presented by federal prosecutors, Jenkins accepted over $75,000 in bribes from multiple individuals, including businessmen from Northern Virginia, who received official Culpeper County Sheriff’s Office badges and credentials, despite lacking proper training, vetting, or any legitimate duties within the Sheriff's Office. ‘Robbie’ wanted for list of charges from Powhatan hit & run

Virginia State Police is on the hunt for Robin Lynwood Wood, Jr. who has reportedly been on the run for nearly 4 months. Also known as “Robbie," Wood is wanted for charges stemming from a serious crash in Powhatan on November 17, 2024. Wood was reportedly driving an SUV, doing 77 mph in a 55-mph zone. A Powhatan deputy attempted to stop him for speeding. VSP said Wood attempted to elude the officer and was traveling at a high rate of speed. In the midst of this getaway, he crashed into the woods and hit numerous trees. Michael Donivan White, the South Carolina man who pulled the trigger and killed Michael Chandler, a Big Stone Gap police officer, just got sentenced to another 100 years in prison. A fatal call Chandler was killed on November 13, 2021. Around 4 a.m. that morning, he responded to a welfare check at a place known locally as “the red house.”  Virginia State Police said it was well known to law enforcement for civil disturbances, warrants, welfare checks, overdoses, assaults, and drug activity. Powhatan man wanted for hit & run

Virginia State Police identified the suspect in the May 26, 2024 hit and run in Powhatan and is asking for the public’s help to find him. The suspect, Dustin A. Bailey, is a 36-year-old Powhatan resident. According to VSP, he previously worked on Iron Bridge Road in Chesterfield and in the City of Richmond. (Photo: VSP) On the day of that incident, at approximately 10:04 a.m., a 2019 Kia Forte was stopped at a red light on Rt. 60 (Anderson Highway) at the intersection with Luck Stone Rd. and was rear-ended by a 2004 Chevrolet Avalanche that reportedly fled the scene. The Forte drive suffered minor injuries according to VSP. According to NextEra Energy, the transmission company responsible for the project, MARL is part of broader effort to strengthen the backbone of the region’s energy grid. The proposed transmission line is expected to stretch about 105 miles and includes adding a new 500/138-kV substation in Frederick County, VA. Poquoson woman charged for drug smuggling attempt at Haynesville Correctional Center

Today, Virginia Department of Corrections announced a Poquoson woman is facing a felony drug distribution charge after a foiled smuggling attempt at Haynesville Correctional Center last fall. On November 22, Kristyn Nicole Mazzariello came to the Haynesville facility to visit a family member for an inmate graduation, reported VADOC. She was stopped, asked to submit to a drug and contraband scan by a VADOC K-9, and the K-9 altered authorities to Mazzariello’s body and inside her vehicle, the department stated. Mazzariello admitted to having drugs and turned over three packages that were previously concealed on her body, which had 90 Buprenorphine and Naloxone strips and 7 synthetic marijuana papers, VADOC reported.
