Lane closures & delays coming to Norris Bridge

Prepare for nighttime traffic delays when crossing the Robert O. Norris Jr. Bridge, also known as the White Stone Bridge, as VDOT will begin a rehabilitation project on March 31. VDOT said the work on the bridge, which carries Rt. 3 between Lancaster and Middlesex, will involve closures and drivers should expect delays. During the project, workers will be strengthening and replacing structural steel elements on the bridge. The first two weeks will be used to take measurements and assess the materials needed for the forthcoming repairs. VDOT is conducting on study on the driving conditions in Gloucester on Rt. 14 between Main Street and Ware Neck Rd. focused on safety, congestion, access management, and bicycle/pedestrian accommodation in the study area. VDOT is encouraging the public to provide input on their travel experience via this survey. Stafford County Sheriff’s Office announced Rt.17 (Warrenton Rd.) was closed shortly before 11:30 a.m. this morning due to an accident that resulted in downed power lines. The incident in the area of Lichfield Blvd & McWhirt Loop closed north and southbound lanes. As of 3 pm, the closure was still in effect, and VDOT warned drivers to continue expecting major delays in the England Run and Hartwood areas. Tractor-trailer kills pedestrian on I-664 in Suffolk

The Commonwealth’s Attorney in Suffolk will determine whether or not to file charges against Demarquese Larnell Hayes, the truck driver involved in the fatal crash on I-664 South in Suffolk on Tuesday, March 4. According to Virginia State Police, it appears 39-year-old Corey L. B. Knight was driving a 2023 Volkswagen GTI, pulled over on the right shoulder of I-664 at College Drive, and got out. Hayes came along in a 2023 Freightliner tractor-trailer and drifted onto the shoulder striking Knight and the Volkswagen, killing Knight immediately, said VSP. Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel project reaches major milestone on new tunnel

The Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel project has reached a major milestone. Chessie, the tunnel boring machine that was clearing the way, completed her mining mission this week. CBBT is adding a new two-lane tunnel that’s about a mile long. Chessie started working in February 2023, but in May 2023, she hit an obstruction that CBBT announced was a ship’s anchor made in England at the turn of the 20th century. Chessie was out of work for 8 months while it was removed. In May 2024, Chessie returned to work pushing along at an average of about 50 feet a day, according to the CBBT. Crash in Weems leaves 1 dead, 1 in critical condition

A single-vehicle crash on Greentown Road in Weems claimed the life of a 63-year-old man and has left a Kilmarnock woman in critical condition, Virginia State Police reported. The crash occurred around 8:40 p.m. last night, January 30. Irvin Maurice Yerby, of Weems, was driving a 1997 Chevrolet S-10 pickup truck. He was on Greentown Road, about three-tenths of a mile south of Gaskins Road, when he ran off the left side, VSP reported. The pickup flipped multiple times and he and his passenger, 56-year-old Martha Lynn Veney, were thrown out. VSP investigating 9-vehicle crash in VA Beach involving unknown vehicle

Virginia State Police confirmed there is an investigation underway into an incident involving an unknown vehicle linked to a 9-vehicle crash in Virginia Beach. The incident occurred at approximately 8:30 p.m. on I-64 East at Indian River Rd. According to VSP, an unknown vehicle “became disabled” in a traffic lane and stopped in the path of traffic. That caused other vehicles to have stop abruptly, and they began crashing into one another, said VSP. Meanwhile, the vehicle that was disabled left the scene, VSP reported. Newport News woman dies after 3-vehicle crash in Hampton

Virginia State Police confirmed the woman killed in a 3-vehicle crash in Hampton yesterday was 21-year-old Joniyah Marlecah Temple of Newport News. The incident occurred around 6:30 p.m. Temple was heading east on I-64 and her tire blew out at Mercury Boulevard, VSP reported. In response, she overcorrected, which caused her to spin out of control, and she crashed into the jersey wall. VSP said that left her car in the left lane facing oncoming traffic. Virginia State Police is investigating a fatal crash that occurred in Northumberland on Christmas Eve. Details remain limited but VSP said it responded to the incident at about 2 a.m. In Burgess, there as a single-car crash involving a 2010 Chevrolet Cobalt less than one-third of a mile from the intersection of Rt. 360 and Rt. 200. The car ran off the right side of the road, the westbound side, and struck a tree, VSP reported. The Christmas Eve closure of the intersection at Richmond Road and Rochambeau Drive in James City County was due to a police-involved crash that sent two people to the hospital. According to the findings of a preliminary investigation conducted by Virginia State Police, at approximately 6:00 p.m., a JCC officer was going east on Rt. 60 (Rochambeau Drive) heading through the stop light at Richmond Rd. A pickup truck driven by Marvin Lima-Ortega, disregarded a red light from the left turn lane, cutting in front of the officer, VSP stated.
