VDOT seeking comments on travel conditions in Kilmarnock

VDOT is asking for feedback on existing travel conditions along Route 3 in the Town of Kilmarnock between Hawthorne Avenue and School Street. The department is conducting a STARS study to address safety, congestion, access management, and bicycle/pedestrian needs within the study area. Information gathered will help VDOT assess potential safety and operational improvements. VDOT announced the King & Queen Board of Supervisors has requested that through truck restrictions be placed on several of the county’s backroads. If the changes are implemented, it will mean additional miles for the truckers forced to take alternate routes. More traffic changes coming for Rt. 14 in Mathews

More changes are coming for traffic using Rt. 14 in Mathews. Tomorrow, April 14, VDOT will begin a major rehab project on the Rt. 14 bridge over North End Branch to replace the superstructure—the portion of the bridge that absorbs the load. This project will result in alternating one-way traffic through the work zone, which traffic controlled by temporary traffic signals. And the speed limit on Rt. 14 over North End Branch will be reduced from 55 to 35 mph. Since this project is less than a mile from the Route 3/Route 14 project near Fort Nonsense VDOT announced it will also be reducing the speed limit from 55 to 45 mph between the two projects. Public asked to pinpoint problems on I-81

VDOT is offering drivers the chance to pinpoint exactly where they’re experiencing problems on I-81 in Virginia. A new study is underway to identify where the next round of projects for the I-81 Corridor Improvement Plan should be. Phase 1 of that study includes a public survey that has an interactive map spanning the entire 325 miles of I-81 in Virginia. The public can use that map to post pins for issues such as high rates of crashes, poor grading and curves, and aggressive driving at the locations where they’re experiencing those issues. A view of the interactive map and pins VDOT plans to use the feedback from the public to determine whether its recent traffic-data analysis aligns with what drivers report they’re experiencing. Lane closures & delays coming to Norris Bridge

Prepare for nighttime traffic delays when crossing the Robert O. Norris Jr. Bridge, also known as the White Stone Bridge, as VDOT will begin a rehabilitation project on March 31. VDOT said the work on the bridge, which carries Rt. 3 between Lancaster and Middlesex, will involve closures and drivers should expect delays. During the project, workers will be strengthening and replacing structural steel elements on the bridge. The first two weeks will be used to take measurements and assess the materials needed for the forthcoming repairs. Extended closure of Warrenton Rd. in Stafford continues

Stafford County Sheriff’s Office announced Rt.17 (Warrenton Rd.) was closed shortly before 11:30 a.m. this morning due to an accident that resulted in downed power lines. The incident in the area of Lichfield Blvd & McWhirt Loop closed north and southbound lanes. As of 3 pm, the closure was still in effect, and VDOT warned drivers to continue expecting major delays in the England Run and Hartwood areas. Tractor-trailer kills pedestrian on I-664 in Suffolk

The Commonwealth’s Attorney in Suffolk will determine whether or not to file charges against Demarquese Larnell Hayes, the truck driver involved in the fatal crash on I-664 South in Suffolk on Tuesday, March 4. According to Virginia State Police, it appears 39-year-old Corey L. B. Knight was driving a 2023 Volkswagen GTI, pulled over on the right shoulder of I-664 at College Drive, and got out. Hayes came along in a 2023 Freightliner tractor-trailer and drifted onto the shoulder striking Knight and the Volkswagen, killing Knight immediately, said VSP. State Police were dispatched to the scene around 1:15 a.m. and said Knight had turned on the vehicle's lights. There is no evidence of drug or alcohol intoxication, or speed was a factor, said VSP. Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel project reaches major milestone on new tunnel

The Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel project has reached a major milestone. Chessie, the tunnel boring machine that was clearing the way, completed her mining mission this week. CBBT is adding a new two-lane tunnel that’s about a mile long. Chessie started working in February 2023, but in May 2023, she hit an obstruction that CBBT announced was a ship’s anchor made in England at the turn of the 20th century. Chessie was out of work for 8 months while it was removed. In May 2024, Chessie returned to work pushing along at an average of about 50 feet a day, according to the CBBT. Crash in Weems leaves 1 dead, 1 in critical condition

A single-vehicle crash on Greentown Road in Weems claimed the life of a 63-year-old man and has left a Kilmarnock woman in critical condition, Virginia State Police reported. The crash occurred around 8:40 p.m. last night, January 30. Irvin Maurice Yerby, of Weems, was driving a 1997 Chevrolet S-10 pickup truck. He was on Greentown Road, about three-tenths of a mile south of Gaskins Road, when he ran off the left side, VSP reported. The pickup flipped multiple times and he and his passenger, 56-year-old Martha Lynn Veney, were thrown out.
