The cause of death for the Navy sailor Angelina Resendiz has been ruled undetermined, her family reported.
In a statement, the family wrote “Given the condition of her body, we understand why this conclusion was reached by the medical examiner.”
Resendiz, a 21-year-old based at Naval Station Norfolk, was found dead off base nearly two weeks after she went missing.

According to her mother, Esmeralda Castle, Resendiz was found in a wooded area by children. She was sent home to her family in Texas on June 20.
Castle said the Navy sent her daughter home with “with no respect, no dignity, no honor.” Resendiz was infested with maggots and bugs and was decaying. They didn’t preserve the body, her mother said.

Castle has criticized the Navy’s handling of the situation from the very beginning. And US Senators Tim Kaine and Mark Warner also raised concern about the manner in which Resendiz’s remains were sent to Texas.
“There is a system in place and it does not work. And I don’t know if it’s ever worked. And I don’t know if anyone would acknowledge that there’s a problem and accept responsibility for it to make a change,” Castle previously said.
“This is a pattern… It needs to be exposed,” she said of the tragedy surrounding her daughter.
Castle said she believes the Navy has been trying to keep things quiet and protect its image, but she has vowed not to be quiet or stop searching for answers until she finds out what happened to her daughter.
