Crash in Weems leaves 1 dead, 1 in critical condition

A single-vehicle crash on Greentown Road in Weems claimed the life of a 63-year-old man and has left a Kilmarnock woman in critical condition, Virginia State Police reported.

The crash occurred around 8:40 p.m. last night, January 30.

Irvin Maurice Yerby, of Weems, was driving a 1997 Chevrolet S-10 pickup truck. He was on Greentown Road, about three-tenths of a mile south of Gaskins Road, when he ran off the left side, VSP reported. The pickup flipped multiple times and he and his passenger, 56-year-old Martha Lynn Veney, were thrown out.

According to VSP, neither of them was wearing seatbelt at the time of the crash.

Emergency Medical Services transported both victims to a local hospital, and they were airlifted to VCU Medical Center in Richmond.

Yerby died from his injuries at the hospital, VSP confirmed. As of Friday morning, Veney is still classified as being in critical condition.

The investigation remains underway, but VSP said its finding thus far indicate alcohol and speed were both contributing factors in the crash.
