A high-speed chase on I-64 yesterday ended in a crash and the arrest of a suspect wanted for federal gun charges, Virginia State Police revealed.
The incident began around 4:51 p.m. when law enforcement officers attempted to pull over a 2011 Chevrolet Camaro for improper registration. The driver, later identified as 28-year-old Evan Devon Boyd Jr., refused to stop, sparking a pursuit near the 262-mile marker on I-64 west, VSP reported.
Boyd, who was already wanted on federal firearm indictments and felony eluding charges out of Hampton, led officers on a tense chase before crashing the vehicle, VSP noted.
Explaining the crash, VSP said, as Boyd took the Hampton Roads Center Parkway exit (261A), he lost control of the Camaro, striking a guardrail. The chase continued until he collided with a 2015 Ford Explorer at the intersection of Hampton Roads Center Parkway and Big Bethel Road.
According to VSP, Boyd then fled the scene of the crash on foot. He was quickly apprehended by authorities without further incident.
The driver of the Ford Explorer, Alexander Young of Newport News, sustained minor, non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to Riverside Hospital for treatment, VSP reported.
Boyd was taken to Hampton Sentara Careplex for evaluation because, according to VSP, he ingested an unknown substance during the pursuit. Once cleared, he was transported to the Hampton City Jail.
Boyd now faces a slew of charges, including felony eluding, felony destruction of property, possession of ammunition by a felon, possession of Schedule I/II narcotics, and felony hit and run. He was also served with outstanding charges for felony eluding and federal firearm offenses.
VSP said this incident was handled in partnership with Hampton Police Department.
