Henry County Sheriff Vows Aggressive Pursuit in ‘Egregious’ Animal Cruelty Case

“Let us be clear: this investigation will not stop,” the Henry County Sheriff’s Office stated amid a boots‑on‑the‑ground investigation into a “disturbing and deeply troubling act of animal cruelty.”

On December 27, a poodle named Bella was let outside by her owner. Within minutes, the owners and several others heard gunshots.

Bella was found suffering from injuries consistent with being shot with birdshot, the Henry County Sheriff’s Office said.

The poodle was rushed to emergency care and underwent multiple procedures and surgeries. She is now recovering with her family but was left blind as a result of the incident, HCSO reported.

The investigation has now reached the one‑month mark, and Sheriff Wayne Davis has promised that the case will be pursued aggressively.

Investigators have conducted extensive neighborhood canvasses, numerous interviews, followed up on every lead, reviewed available information, and continue to dedicate time and resources toward identifying those responsible. “This has been an ongoing effort, and investigators are not slowing down.”

The incident occurred very close to Bella’s home near 85 Holloway Drive. HCSO is asking for the public’s help—especially residents in the Fairmont Drive and Holloway Drive areas of Bassett.

“This was a cruel and deliberate act, and it has deeply affected this family and our community,” said Sheriff Davis.

“Acts of violence against animals will not be tolerated in Henry County,” he said. “We will continue pursuing every lead until those responsible are identified and held fully accountable under the law.”

Sheriff Davis also stated, “If someone can provide information that leads to an arrest and conviction, I will personally go before the Martinsville‑Henry County Crimestoppers Board and request the full award amount of $2,500.”
