Man dead at Courtland Inn after police receive threat of self-harm call

The Norfolk Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will be conducting a death investigation involving a man who appears to have shot himself at the Courtland Inn on Jerusalem Rd., Southampton Sheriff’s Office confirmed.

The incident began shortly after 3 p.m. yesterday when a call came in reporting a man made a threat to harm himself to one of his family members, the Sheriff’s Office stated.

When police arrived at the scene, no one answered the door of the room where the man in question was believed to be and no one was able to contact him, the Sheriff’s Office stated. Deputies planned to enter the room to verify if the man was in there and to see if he needed any medical attention so they obtained a key from motel staff.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, as soon as deputies opened the door, a gunshot was fired. The deputies reportedly took cover, set up a perimeter, and called for backup.

Authorities continued trying to establish contact with the man who was believed to be in the room, and “after some time passed” without a response, the Sheriff’s Office said Southampton SWAT went in.

One man was in the room, and he was suffering from “what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound,” said the Sheriff’s Office. EMS pronounced him dead at 3:55 p.m.
