Northern VA measles investigation underway on heels of 3rd confirmed case

Less than two weeks after confirming the third measles case of 2025, the Virginia Department of Health (VDH) is investigating a new potential exposure linked to an international traveler who passed through Washington Dulles International Airport and the Washington Area Metro on Sunday, June 8.

Health officials are working swiftly to identify individuals who may have come into contact with the virus. Investigators are contacting passengers from specific flights and advising those present at key locations during the identified windows to monitor their health and review their vaccination history.

Potential exposure sites include:

  • Dulles International Airport (IAD): Concourse A, transport to the International Arrivals Building (IAB), and baggage claim between 10:30 a.m. and 1:00 p.m.
  • Washington Metro: Silver Line from Dulles to Metro Center Station, then Red Line toward Shady Grove between 11:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.

3rd confirmed case

This investigation comes in the wake of Virginia’s third confirmed measles case, reported in a child under five from the Northwest Region who became ill after contact with another known case.

Potential exposure linked to that case occurred in Charlottesville at SugarBear Ice Cream on May 31 and Lowe’s on June 1.

Earlier cases this year were reported in April and May, making this year’s total three confirmed cases before the current investigation.

Who needs to take action?

According to VDH, individuals vaccinated with two doses of a measles-containing vaccine, or those born before 1957, are considered protected and need not take further action.

However, those without documented immunity may be at risk and should:

  • Contact their healthcare provider or local health department to discuss post-exposure prophylaxis.
  • Monitor for symptoms such as fever, rash, cough, and runny nose for 21 days from potential exposure.
  • Immediately isolate and call ahead before visiting a medical facility if symptoms develop.

The public is urged to stay informed through the VDH Measles website and remain vigilant in protecting themselves and others.
