Suspect in custody after woman killed & 2 officers shot in Chesapeake

A 39-year-old man is in custody following a deadly domestic violence incident in Chesapeake that left a woman dead and two police officers shot.

Shaun M. Boker was apprehended Wednesday morning in Portsmouth after a brief standoff with police.

The incident began Wednesday night, August 6, when Chesapeake Police responded to a domestic assault call at an apartment in the 500 block of Willow Bridge Court.

Officers arrived just before 10:30 p.m. According to Chesapeake Police Dept. they heard a woman inside the apartment screaming for help. As they attempted to get in the front door, Boker allegedly opened fire shooting through the door striking two officers.

Both officers were transported to a hospital with injuries believed to be non-life-threatening. The Chesapeake Police SWAT Team and negotiators were activated, and Greenbrier Parkway was temporarily closed between City Park Drive and Kempsville Road as law enforcement worked to secure the scene.

Once police gained entry into the apartment, they found a woman with gunshot wounds. She was transported to a nearby hospital where she later died.

Detectives quickly identified Boker as a suspect and issued a public alert, warning that he was considered armed and dangerous.

Boker was located in Portsmouth early Thursday morning. A shelter-in-place alert was issued for resident between the 30 and 50 blocks of Cypress Rd.

After a standoff, around 8:24 a.m., Portsmouth Police took Boker into custody. He has since been transferred to Chesapeake Police Detectives for further investigation.

Boker now faces multiple felony charges in connection with the incident, including:

  • 1st Degree Murder
  • 2 Counts of Attempted Murder of a Law Enforcement Officer
  • 2 Counts of Aggravated Malicious Wounding of a Law Enforcement Officer
  • 3 Counts of Use of a Firearm in the Commission of a Felony
  • Discharging a Firearm Within an Occupied Dwelling

In addition to these charges, Boker had two pending misdemeanor charges of assault and battery of a family member in Chesapeake. Both involve the same woman who was killed in Tuesday night’s shooting, the Virginian-Pilot reported.

The charge for an incident on April 1 stemmed from Boker allegedly showing up intoxicated at a motel on Sentinel Drive, where the woman was. He attempted to reconcile with her but when she refused to perform a sexual act, Boker got angry, chest-bumped her and made verbal threats, the Virginian-Pilot reported.

The other charge stemmed from a May 23 incident at Willow Bridge Court apartment where the shootings occurred. Boker came over and again tried to rekindle the relationship but started talking about voices he was hearing, the Virginian-Pilot stated.

Following both incidents the victim reportedly got a restraining order. Boker is scheduled to appear in court for both charges on August 27.

Court records show that Boker’s encounters with the law include an assault and battery of family member charge in Portsmouth that was dismissed in January. And last year, he was convicted of trespassing after being forbidden in Portsmouth.
