Essex man killed in early morning crash

This morning, the southbound lanes of Rt. 17, aka Tidewater Trail, in the Caret area of Essex were shut down for hours due to a fatal crash that’s now under investigation by Virginia State Police. At 4:40 a.m., VSP was dispatched to the scene at Supply Road and Tidewater Trail where there was a two-vehicle crash involving a 2018 Chevrolet pickup and a tractor-trailer. According to VSP, the pickup driver, 61-year-old Danny William Holmes, failed to stop at the stop sign and hit the tractor-tractor trailer, which was heading south on Tidewater Trail. Holmes, an Essex resident, died at the scene. The driver of the tractor-trailer, who wasn’t named, was injured, but VSP said the injuries were non-life-threatening. Accomack hit with 2nd fatal pedestrian crash in a week

Virginia State Police is investigating the second fatal pedestrian crash in less than a week. Last night, just before 10 p.m., VSP said troopers were called out to investigate a crash on Rt. 13, south of the Rt. 175 intersection in the Oak Hall Area of Accomack. From preliminary investigations, VSP said it appears a 2004 Toyota Prius was traveling northbound on Route 13 through a controlled intersection and hit 53 year-old Thomas Leandreas Wharton, of Mappsville, who was walking in the left travel lane. Wharton died upon impact, VSP reported. The driver, 36-year-old Judea Amenda Van Smith of Cambridge, MD suffered non-life-threatening injuries, and VSP said she was transported Salisbury Regional Hospital. State Police in Maryland and Virginia have launched investigations after a Virginia Beach man allegedly stabbed two people, abducted his three children, and then killed the youngest in a fatal crash across state lines. According to Virginia Beach Police Department, a call came in at about 8:48 p.m. reporting a stabbing in the 900 block of Jay Are Court. Crash on Hampton side of HRBT claims Norfolk woman

A Norfolk woman was killed by a crash at the Hampton side of the Hampton Road Bridge Tunnel yesterday. Virginia State Police said preliminary investigations show 49-year-old Tonya Denise Hinkle was driving a 2024 Jetta and was in the left lane at the mouth of the tunnel when she rear-ended a 2023 Hyundai Santa Fe. According to VSP, due to the impact, Hinklethen ran off the road, hit into a jersey wall, and was pushed back into traffic where she crashed into 2012 F-150. Hinkle survived a trip to Norfolk General Hospital, but VSP said she later died from the injuries. The other two drivers only suffered minor injuries. A concerned friend discovered that 30-year-old Austin Trevor Hale of Virginia Beach had been in a fatal accident in Norfolk on July 31, but according to Virginia State Police, it’s unknown when that crash occurred. According to VSP, on Wednesday, the unnamed friend called the Emergency Communications Center and explained that he had not heard from Hale all day. 2 Winchester men killed in Essex crash, driver charged

A Winchester man has been charged for an Essex County crash that led to the death of two men. The single-vehicle crash occurred last Wednesday on Route 17. Martimiano Perez Linares, age 42, was heading northbound in a 2003 Dodge pickup that was pulling a small trailer, Virginia State Police stated. In the 5300 block of Tidewater Trail (Rt. 17) Linares ran off the road to the left, overturned, and his three passengers were thrown from the truck. Jose Euglogio Cruz Gomez, 61, and Wulfrano Cruz Gomez, 41, who were both also Winchester residents, died at the scene. Linares was entrapped. No bond was granted for the Knoxville, TN man charged amid a fatal DUI crash in Frederick County on Monday. Virginia State Police said they responded to the scene on I-81 at the 316 mile marker shortly before 11 p.m. Troopers found a 2018 Toyota Highlander reportedly driven by 54-year-old Kenneth Bireta was traveling north on I-81 when it ran off the left side of the road into the median. Truck driver killed in hit-and-run on I-81 in Shenandoah, VSP wants info

Virginia State Police is seeking information related to a hit-and-run that killed a truck driver in Shenandoah County. According to VSP, James W. Carr, Jr. a 64-year-old Alton, NH man was hit by an unknown vehicle on Saturday, March 23, on I-81 at the 296-mile marker. Police say the crash occurred between 5:00 – 8:12 a.m. Carr was a pedestrian and was in the roadway when he was hit by a northbound vehicle that didn’t stop. VSP has not provided any explanation for why Carr in the road. Woodbridge man charged for death of Newport News man in Fairfax

Virginia State have announced charges against a Woodbridge man accused of killing a pedestrian in a fatal crash on I-495 west in Fairfax on Sunday, March 10. At around 3:30 a.m., Gregory B,. Bruington, Jr., a 30-year-old Newport News man, was on the left shoulder of the highway at the 175-mile marker changing the tire on a 2017 VW Golf. Carlos Lisandro Nunez-Morales was driving a 2003 Dodge Ram when he ran off the road to the left and hit Bruington, VSP reported. Bruington died at the scene. Fatal crashes in Virginia are stacking up, and reports continue rolling in of the numerous deadly incidents that occurred in recent days. As previously reported, on Sunday, two pedestrians were killed in separate incidents in Fairfax near the same exit. Brunswick truck crash VSP reported that, on Friday, around 9:30 a.m. 52-year-old John Oliver Harrison of Lawrenceville was headed north on Rt. 46 in Brunswick County. He was near Woodley Ave. in a tractor-trailer loaded with lumber. Harrison reportedly ran off the road and struck a group of trees.
