2 pedestrians killed on I-495 in Fairfax in separate incidents

Virginia State Police were dispatched to two fatal pedestrian crashes in Fairfax County today within a half-hour. The incidents were in close proximity but are unrelated, police say. Incident #1 The call for the first incident came in at 3:39 a.m. VSP said, at present, it appears that the unnamed individual was on the shoulder of the westbound lanes of I-495 east of Exit 176 changing a tire and got hit by a truck. The individual changing the tire died at the scene. The unnamed driver of the truck was transported to the hospital. VSP said its Fairfax Division Crash Reconstruction Team is assisting with the investigation, and charges are pending. Sumerduck woman facing involuntary manslaughter for death of Charlottesville woman

Shannon Piper Day, a 37-year-old Sumerduck woman, is being held in Fauquier Adult Detention Center after being charged for a fatal crash last weekend. It was Saturday, March 2, at around 10:26 p.m. and Day was driving a 2018 Ford Explorer heading west on Shipps Tore Rd. (Rt. 637), VSP reported. She was about ½ mile west of Marsh Rd. when she failed to make it around a curve. VSP said Day ran off the right side of the road and crashed into a tree. Her passenger, Claire E. Caruso, a 50-year-old Charlottesville woman, died at the scene from her injuries although, she was wearing a seatbelt, according to police. Investigation underway for fatal single-vehicle crash in York County

Virginia State Police are investigating a fatal, single-vehicle crash in York County that occurred on Friday afternoon. At around 4:30 p.m. VSP troopers responded to the 3000 block of Goodwin Neck Road, which is north of Back Creek Park. Based on preliminary investigations, VSP determined that 30-year-old Aaron Eli Hoopingarner of Yorktown. was traveling northbound on Goodwin Neck Road. He got into the southbound lanes to attempt to pass two vehicles but he ran off the road and hit a traffic sign. After hitting the sign, VSP said it appears the man tried to regain control but he overcorrected. He ran off the road again, hit a tree, and was killed upon impact. Another man killed as VSP warns of ‘alarming’ rise in pedestrian fatalities

A fatal pedestrian crash was reported in Greensville County Monday morning at nearly the same time as Virginia State Police was issuing a public advisory about the mounting number of pedestrian crashes in the Commonwealth. Greensville crash In Greensville, the incident was a hit and run that occurred on Pleasant Shade Road (Route 58). According to VSP Sergeant Michelle Anaya, a man was walking westbound on Pleasant Shade Rd. when an unknown vehicle hit him. Virginia State Police were calling on the public to help identify a white male killed along Rt. 11 in Augusta. That man has now been identified as Tony L. Epperson, age 37, of West Augusta. According to VSP, at midnight, on February 9, Trooper A.J Garasimowicz was dispatched to the scene of a fatal pedestrian crash along Route 11 north at the Interstate 81 northbound entrance ramp in Greenville. Manassas man ejected, killed in I-81 crash in Shenandoah

A two-vehicle accident on I-81 in Shenandoah County proved fatal for an ejected passenger. The incident occurred Monday, January 29, at 6 p.m. at the 289 mile marker, Virginia State Police reported. A 2015 Ford F350 experienced a driver’s side blowout, which caused the truck to run off the right side of the road, flip, and hit the guardrail. Wilson R. Acosta Zelaya, a 21-year-old of Springfield, was in the backseat and was not wearing a seatbelt, VSP stated. He was thrown from the vehicle into roadway and was hit by a Kenworth tractor-trailer. Traffic delays around midday on Rt. 288 South in Chesterfield were caused by a crash near Watkins Center Parkway that sparked a fire and shut down all of the travel lanes. Around 11:30 a.m. a tractor-trailer and an SUV collided and a power line was hit, according to Virginia State Police. The toppled pole left power lines in the highway. Chesterfield Fire and EMS reported that one car got tangled in the power lines and an individual inside required assistance getting out. No one was injured, and there were no reports of any vehicles catching on fire. 80-year-old Emporia woman killed by Greensville County crash

An 80-year-old Emporia woman was killed in a single-vehicle crash on Tuesday, Virginia State Police reported. The incident occurred on Low Ground Rd. just south of Little Low Ground Rd. in Greensville County. According to VSP, the investigation revealed Merle Marie Thorpe, was traveling southbound and, for an undisclosed reason, she crossed into the northbound lanes. The woman then ran off the road, and the 2005 Chevy Impala she was driving crashed into a tree stump before flipped over leaving, said VSP. Woman unidentifiable after Isle of Wight crash

The extent of the injuries in an Isle of Wight crash Tuesday night left Virginia State Police unable to positively identify the driver, VSP announced. It was just after 11 p.m. when VSP was informed that there was a single vehicle on Brewers Neck Boulevard north of Newton Haven Lane in Carrolton. Based on its preliminary investigations, VSP said it was determined that the woman, who authorities are currently calling Jane Doe, was traveling northbound on Brewers Neck Boulevard, when she lost control of the vehicle. She ran off the road, struck a ditch, and when the 2004 Ford Taurus hit the ditch, it flipped over several times, said VSP.
